Market Research + Problem Identification

The concept for Freddy Furniture USA was sparked during the quarantine of 2020 with the West Michigan based design studio Fredricks Design, Inc. Like many companies, our first thought after experiencing the spread of COVID 19 across the country was; “how can we help?” Being parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, we immediately identified “study from home” as an ample opportunity.

Ergonomics + Packaging

Once we had decided to focus our efforts on developing a system to help our students study from home more effectively, our first step was packaging the ideal ergonomic condition for students in our target market (K-6).

Ideation

Using our packaging study to inform our ideation phase, we began sketching concepts using in and out of market benchmarking to develop a study environment like no other. We focused on ergonomics, learning tool integration and height adjustment as our key drivers in delivering a product design specifically for young students.

Concept Development

Combining our early concepts and whittling down ideas to solve as many problems as possible our concept began to take shape. Leveraging design, marketing and business disciplines, we moved forward with the best possible option for engineering and prototyping.

Engineering

Bringing in key stakeholders from manufacturing we were able to engineer and nail down final details of our production level assembly. We leverage our manufacturing partners early in the process to head off any issues as we release into production. We wanted to take advantage of things that they felt would work well for all parties and minimize issues that can lead to cost inflation.

Prototype + Testing

We build prototypes throughout our entire design process to learn from. These prototypes range from rough mock up builds to test ergonomics and spacial constraints to production intent properties built by our manufacturing partners. We also leverage these prototypes at all levels to run tests and better understand our users experience.

Branding + Marketing

Freddy Furniture is unique because its a product launched under our own brand. This means we are responsible for all of our own branding, marketing and sales. This type of work really helps when understanding our clients needs from different aspects of their companies. We have been through it so we know it.

Accessory Development

The work never stops. We continue to develop accessories and adding to our initial system and offering. We believe in product personalization and doing everything we can to answer our customers needs. We have received fantastic feedback on our product line and try to incorporate everything we learn into future development.
